Powdercoating powder is a blend of binders, resins, pigments, fillers and additives. The powder is applied in dry granular form directly to the piece via an electrostatic spray process. The part is cured in an oven at high heat where the poweder melts into a smooth film.
The benefits of powdercoating -vs- painting.
- More durable
- More consistent finish
- Less expensive
- More ecological
So you get a better quality finish for less expense!
More durable
The cured finish is less susceptible to damage such as chipping, scratching and other abrasions.
More consistent finish
The electrostatic process means that the powder is "attracted" to the piece and can even pull or "wrap" the powder around the backside of the piece. Where a liquid [paint] spray would leave a thin uneven coat... Electrostatically applied powder is consistent and covers completely.
Less expensive
There are many features of the powdercoating process that make it more economical than paint.
- There are no solvents required for either application or cleanup.
- Since the electrostatic application process draws the powder to the piece, there is very little overspray or wasted powder.
- The application process is simpler than paint so fewer errors result.
More ecological
- There are no solvents required, so no solvents to dispose of.
- There is dramatically less waste, so... well there is less trash to take out.
- Air used to ventilate the powdercoating booth is recirculated rather than exhausted.
- Curing fumes are practically eliminated.
